Former two-division champion Danny Garcia (34-1, 2o KOs) returned on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with a very predictable win over Brandon Rios (34-4-1, 25 KOs) in their WBC welterweight world title elimination bout. Upon landing a big straight right hand in the 9th round, Rios crumbled to the canvas. Although he got back on his feet, referee Kenny Bayless clearly did not think Rios could continue and waved off the fight 2:25 into the 9th round. This was a good decision.
The outcome was not surprising. Although tough, Rios does not possess Garcia's technical skill and became more vulnerable to Garcia's right hand as the fight continued. Rios made a good effort in pursuing Garcia, landing big punches, exploding with combinations, and continually coming forward. However, Garcia remained composed, continued moving, and landing that right hand at will.
With this win, Garcia may get a rematch with WBC and WBA champion Keith Thurman or will square off against IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. Garcia has not fought since losing the WBC title to Thurman in March of 2017.
"I felt the ring rust a little bit in the beginning," Garcia said in his post fight interview. "He's a good inside fighter and he was giving me some good uppercuts. He came to fight. I came to box, and I did that. I came to bang, and I gave the fans what they wanted — a knockout."
Rios said in his post fight interview, "I'm mad. I don't like going out like that. I'm a warrior, I got back up and I wanted to continue. I guess the corner stopped it but I'm mad. I'm mad because I got up still. I'm a warrior. I'm still in the game. I didn't think he did much to hurt me."
The post fight interview took an unexpected turn when Shawn Porter entered the ring, trying to make a fight with Garcia. In a very cocky display of words, Porter told Garcia to come to his backyard of Las Vegas, Nevada. Garcia then reminded Porter that he was from Ohio (which was a good point), and the two continued bickering. The conversation became heated quickly. Ringside reporter Jim Gray ended the interaction stating, "Shawn you had your shot. It's his night. Kenny Porter and Shawn Porter making a scene in here on an evening that's not theirs. Get out of the ring."
Garcia then added, "This is the Danny Garcia show. Get the f*** out of here."
