WBO cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk survived a close fight with WBC champion Mairis Briedis to unify the WBO and WBC cruiserweight titles. The fight took place as part of the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament.
Usyk was the big betting favorite going into the fight, but Briedis fought aggressively and kept the fight close. In the end, it was Usyk who picked up the majority decision win with scores of 115-113, 115-113, and 114-114.
The 31 year-old Usyk improves his record to 14-0, 11 KO's.
Usyk advances to the finals of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament, which will take place on May 11, 2018. Usyk will fight the winner of IBF world champion Murat Gassiev (25-0, 18 KO's) and WBA regular champion Yunier Dorticos (22-0, 21 KO's), who fight each other February 3, 2018. The finals of the World Boxing Super Series are expected to take place on May 11, 2018.
